For travel times and distances from other points in Costa Rica you can use this distance calculator:
There are two main routes from San Jose.
Option One - New Toll highway (HWY 27) & costal road: Takes 3 to 3.5 hour from San Jose International Airport and the shorter and quickest way from the Airport in San Jose to TikiVillas using the new toll highway.
(Please note that some Sundays Hwy 27 is one way (from the beach area to San Jose) from 12pm to 6pm. If traveling to the coast during these times on applicable Sundays you will need to take the old road using Route 3, so driving to Atenas then Aguacate then Orotina and following signes to the coast Puntarenas Jaco. Please ask your rent a car or hotel for further details or contact us)
We suggest you exchanging at least $5 US dollars into Costa Rican colones for the tolls on the highway. Ask the rental car agent to send you off in the right direction, which should be west on Route 1, past the airport.
Note: The first 13 km uses the same "old" route to Uvita. Some GPS devices might not be updated and could still have the "old" route so do not rely on them to follow the complete recommended route.
Once on Route 1 - follow signs to San Ramon, and continue straight ahead for about 10 km. After the second bridge crossing, get in the right lane and take the next exit (Route 3) for Jaco / Quepos / Manuel Antonio. There is also a sign here for Punta Leona and Atenas. Turn left at the stop sign, crossing back over Route 1.
Follow Route 3 for about 3 km. Look for a large Christian church on the left and then a soccer field and make a left on the road immediately after it. You are on the road to Turrucares. There are no signs and it's a secondary road, so don't think you've made a mistake. It's currently the best connection to the toll highway from the airport.
Drive for another 3 km through this somewhat winding road. Once you arrive at the highway intersection turn left BEFORE the highway. Again, there are might still be no signs there here yet. Be careful as it's a narrow two-way gravel access road. After some 300 meters you will arrive at a roundabout. Make a right following the highway signs to Orotina / Atenas.
Drive on the highway through 2 toll booths. Then, take the next right exit to Route 34, follow signs for Jaco / Quepos. This exit forms a loop and then you bypass a roundabout to continue to Jaco.
Once on the Costanera highway from Jaco head towards Quepos do not go off at Quepos but continue south to Matapalo and then to Dominical. Once you pass the Police Control and bridge over Baru river, do not turn off to Dominical but continue on the coastal highway for 12km/ 7.5 miles To TikiVillas. A couple of miles before reaching TikiVillas Rainforest Lodge there will be a sign for an entrance to "Cuna del Angel" on your right continue on the highway for a further 3km 1.5 miles, keep an eye out for marker 155km on your right (it's a small white marker with 155km on it), 500 meters (500 yards) the road will start curving to the right as you are coming out of the curve on the left hand side there is a small TikiVillas black sign turn left into the drive (you will need to put the car into 4x4) and our parking is 300 meters (300 yards) at the end of the drive. If you see Km marker 156 or reach a gas station you have gone too far. At night the sign can be a bit hard to see as it is black (we are in the process of replacing it with a more visible one).
Option two - via the mountains - Cerro de la Muerte: Take a 3.5 - 4.5 hour from San Jose a scenic drive through Central Valley, cloud forest and coffee plantations.
Make sure you get directions from the car rental company or hotel on how to get from San Jose on to the Pan American Highway South towards Cartago.
Follow directions to Cartago until you see a sign to San Isidro de General to the right. Follow signs to San Isidro de General it will be about a 3 hour drive through seanic mountains until you arrive at San Isidro de General. Follow the road until you see the McDonnald sign, take a right at McDonnalds and follow the road through town, keep on this road as it will take you to Dominical.
You will travel through the mountains again going through the villages of Tinamastes, Plantanillo and then Baru. About 45 minutes from san Isidro the road ends at an intersection, take a left towards Dominical and pass the Police Control and bridge over Baru river, once on the highway (Costanera) do not turn off to Dominical but continue on the coastal highway for 12km/ 7.5 miles To TikiVillas. We recommend you do not drive this way at night as the mountain road can get foggy
